Places in Kodaikanal That Need Permission to Visit

 Kodaikanal, also known as the 'Princess of the Hills' is one of the most popular hill stations in India. It locates on Palani hills in Dindigul district of Tamil Nadu. Kodaikanal is a good elevated place like other major hill stations of India. With its great elevation of about 2133 m above sea level tourists can enjoy pleasant weather throughout the year. It offers good treat for the visitors as one can enjoy breathtaking and mind blowing natural sceneries.

Here tourists can enjoy many interesting places including Coakers walk, Briyant park, Kodaikanal lake, Pillars rock, Green valley view, Pine forest, Silver cascade, Bear shola falls, Kurinji Andavar Temple, Mannavanur and so on.

However there are some places in Kodaikanal which need permission from Forest department office in Kodaikanal.

Places Which Need Forest Department Permission

Berijam Lake, Mathikettan Shola Forest, Moir Point are some places which locates anywhere between 10 to 18 km away from Kodaikanal. But, very important thing to note is that people who want to enjoy these places need forest department permission. 

Driving License,Vehicles RC Book, Insurance Certificate for Vehicle, Vehicle Pollution Certificate should be provided to get the permission from forest officer. The vehicles owned by forest department will charge rs 100 per person. They will collect rs 200 for private cars and rs 300 for vans.

Berijam Lake

It is situated about 18 km away from the center point of the hill station. Before going to reach this lake, tourists can enjoy mesmerizing natural sceneries, mountain ranges, thick forests. The large fresh water lake Berijam spreads over  58 acres in total. It is spread around the perimeter and looks luscious. 



This lake water is used as drinking water for the people of Periyakulam area of ​​Theni district. Visitors can see many wild animals as they used come to the bank of the lake to drink water. People can visit this place  between 9 am to to 3 pm. Entry fee is rs 100 for a person.

Mathikettan Shola

Of course you are not permitted to enter into this mysterious place of Kodaikanal. It is advised by forest department not to enter the forest. The area of this forest is around 13 sq km.  If a man enters to this forest, he would lost his memory power and normal health. The medicinal and aroma plants which lie on the floor will cause the emerging of odour which can affect the brain activity. So, he will happen to wander inside the forest without the idea of returning to safer place.

Mathikettan Shola

So far 12 people lost their life by entering into this forest. They will die as there is nobody to help them in that thick forests. There are about 250 plant species in this forest. More than 40 varieties of them have good medicinal value

Moir Point

This is another interesting spot in Kodaikanal. It can offer stunning beauty of folded mountains and thick forests. It is named after Sir Thomas Moir who started constructing  Goschen Road in the area.

There is a Monument stands on the Berijam lake.  With the good elevation of 2,310 m It is also known for cloud bed views. Visiting hours are between 10 am to 5 pm. Entry fee is rs 10 per head.
