Will The Use of Electric Cars Prevent Global Warming?

In this age of fast growing technology global warming has become the major concern worldwide. The air pollution is constantly increasing due to the emission of smoke, carbon-di-oxide and carbon monoxide from the smoke towers of numerous factories as well as millions of running vehicles on the road .

Electric Car

Because of this pollution global warming is increasing year by year. Our scientists say that future generations are likely to face various problems such as climate change and sea level rise due to global warming.

In this situation, countries around the world are making serious efforts to prevent global warming. The scientists and researchers are recommending the use of electric cars in order to reduce the pollution. In fact, it is true that the fast growing number of vehicles using petrol or diesel are becoming one of the main reasons for the air pollution.

But, now the question has arisen whether the use of electric cars will really help reducing the earth’s air pollution and prevent its warming. Though scientists  hope that the use of electric cars can prevent the air pollution to certain extent, there are many facts and problems behind this concept.

Thermal Station

The Hidden Problems of Electric Cars

If the electricity for the electric cars is from non – conventional sources like solar panels, windmills the  purpose of use will be successful. However, when the electricity for charging electric cars is from a thermal power plant a large amount of emitting smoke can pollute the air. Therefore, it is clear that the purpose of electric cars can only be achievable if all the electricity for electric cars coming from non-polluting methods.

Production Method of  Electric Cars

There are a lot of differences between the production method of electric cars and of cars running on petrol and diesel.  It is obvious that more environmental pollution will occur when making batteries for the electric cars.

lithium, nickel, cobalt and graphite are rare earth elements used for the production of car batteries. Obviously, miners need to handle large amounts of acidic waste and radioactive residues  to obtain these types of raw materials. Therefore, if this type of acid waste and radioactive waste is not handled properly, they can severely affect the environment. Furthermore, the amount of lithium inside the earth is gradually declining. So, there is a chance to the hike of the price of electric cars for many times in the future.

Are electric car batteries recyclable?

Honestly saying, the answer is no. According to a study by an American company (ICCT), the recycling of 99 percent of lead acid batteries is possible. However, it is true that lithium iron batteries are not recyclable to this extent. A 2011 study said that only 5 percent of lithium went for recycling. The remaining batteries may have remained in the ground. Therefore, Earth’s environment will largely be affected by old batteries as well.

Conclusion

Now we can easily come to a conclusion that electric cars won’t prevent global warming. While the use of them seems to be effective to reduce global warming, there are really so many cons. Therefore, it is concluded that global warming can only be prevented by promoting natural generation of electricity and public transport.
