Amazon is the largest river in the world. It flows through Peru, Colombia and Brazil on the South American continent. A few researchers say it is the longest river in the world, and even longer than the Nile.
It originates on Mount Mismi in the Andes Mountain range of South America and pours massive water into the Atlantic Ocean. Its total length measures 6,992 km.,
Amazon river basin area is 7 million square km in South America. The breadth of the river is ranging from 1 km., to a maximum of 100 km., wide. Thus, it boasts the pride of being the widest river in the world. The minimum depth ranges from 20 meter to a maximum of 100 meter.
The amount of flowing water per second on less rainy days is 64 lakh cubic foot and 1.2 crore cubic feet on rainy days. The average amount of water flowing in this river is said to be greater than the total amount of water flowing in the seven largest rivers in the world next to the Amazon.
Water Sources of The Amazon River
The snow-capped Andes Mountains and the continuous heavy rainfall over the catchment area are the main sources of water for the Amazon River.
The Amazon flows into the equatorial region and receives the heaviest rainfall on most days of the year. Due to the heavy rainfall, a large number of tributaries flow into the Amazon.
To date, more than 1,100 tributaries flow into the Amazon. Of these, more than 17 tributaries are 1,500 km long.
The longest tributary, the Madeira (3,250 km), flows through Bolivia and Brazil. The Purus(3,211 km), which flows through Peru and Brazil, is the second largest river. 2,820 km, long the third largest river, the Japura flows into Colombia and Brazil.
The Tocantins (2,639 km), which flows through Brazil, is the fourth longest tributary of the Amazon. Another tributary, the Araguaia, flows through Brazil stretching upto 2,627 km in length. Another major river, Jurua, is 2,400 km long and flows into Peru and Brazil.
Amazon Rainforest, The Largest in The World
The Amazon River basin is home to the world’s largest rainforest. It covers an area of 7 million square k.m.,. Of which 5.5 million sq. Km. ., is completely forest. It covers more than nine countries in South America.

This forest is home to 30 percent of the world’s vegetation. About 20 percent of the world’s oxygen production occurs in the Amazon rainforest. Thus, these are called the lungs of the world.
It is also a home to tens of crores of plants and animals from around the world.
The Longest River in The World; Amazon or Nile?
It is true that the Amazon is the widest river in the world. But, till few years back scientists said that the longest river in the world is the Nile, which flows through Egypt, Africa.The length of the Nile is 6,650 km.
Scientists claimed that the Amazon River is slightly shorter than the Nile. However, after 14 days of research by Brazilian scientists, it is revealed that the Amazon River is 342 km longer than the Nile.
Therefore, according to the current study, the total length of the Amazon River is 6,992 km. This makes the Amazon the longest river in the world.
