Ooty Toy Train, An Unforgettable Travel Experience

 Ooty toy train journey is one of the most memorable things that most tourists do during their trip to Ooty. This train runs daily from Mettupalayam to Ooty.

If you want to enjoy the natural beauty of the Nilgiris on the way to Ooty, you can take this mountain train. Ooty can also be reached by bus from Mettupalayam, however this toy train offers a memorable experience to the tourists

The mind-blowing nature

On the way, you can enjoy the beauty of the towering Nilgiris, lush green trees, colorful flowers, dazzling high bridges, terrifying caves, monkeys and the wildlife. The journey will be pleasant until you reach Ooty with a total of 208 arches, 250 bridges and 16 caves. The speed of the train is very low so it is convenient to enjoy the natural beauty.

This mountain train is also known as the toy train as it is smaller than the normal trains. There is no such thing as a toilet for the train to be light weight.

UNESCO World Heritage Site

Great thing is that Unesco recently added Nilgiri Mountain Railway as an extension to the World Heritage Site of Darjeeling Himalayan Railway.

The Nilgiri Mountain Railway is the only daily mountain train in South India.

This train runs from Mettupalayam to Ooty only once a day. Runs more than once a day as the number of tourists is high during the summer. It runs from Mettupalayam via Coonoor.

Train Fare Details

First class fare with Ooty Hill Train to Coonoor, has been increased from Rs. 365 to Rs. 445. Similarly, the fare for Ooty has been increased from Rs 470 to Rs 600. Second class fare has been increased from Rs 100 to Rs 190 for Coonoor and from Rs 145 to Rs 295 for Ooty.

Normal unreserved fare from Mettupalayam to Coonoor is hiked from Rs. 50 to Rs. 110 and for Ooty from Rs. 75 to Rs. 175. The tariff hike will come into effect from March 1 of this year.

The total length of the route is 46 km and the journey time is approximately 4 hour. If you are a person who wants a little peace and quiet, you can take first class tickets and travel. You can quietly enjoy the mountains and valleys

In the early days the steam engine pulled mountain toy train, but now a diesel engine has also come into use to pull and push the train. Train boxes are always the same blue and cream. The train has already been featured in many South Indian films.

Ooty Train

Train timings and routes

The train will leave Mettupalayam at 07:10 am and reach Ooty at 12:00 noon, leaving Ooty at 2 pm and arriving at Mettupalayam at around 17:35.

Mountain trains run 4 times a day between Ooty and Coonoor. The first toy train from Coonoor leaves at 7.45 am and reaches Ooty at 9.05 am. The second train will leave Coonoor at 10.40 am and reach Ooty at 12 noon. The third train will leave Ooty at 12.35 pm and reach Ooty at 1.50 pm. The fourth train will leave Coonoor at 4.30 pm and reach Ooty at 5.45 pm.

In the return direction, the train will leave Ooty at 9.15 am and reach Coonoor at 10.25 am. The second train will leave Coonoor at 12.15 pm and reach Coonoor at 1.20 pm. The third train will leave Ooty at 2 pm and reach Coonoor at 3.05 pm. Another train will leave at 6 pm and reach Coonoor at 7.10 pm.

There are 5 railway stations on the way from Mettupalayam to Ooty: Coonoor, Wellington, Aravankadu, Kathy and Lovedale. Lovedale is located very close to Ooty. Also, Coonoor is the second largest town after Ooty and also is a popular hill station.

As usual you can book a mountain train journey at www.irctc.co.in However, due to the rush of tourists, many people do not get the opportunity to travel in the book immediately.
